Why did juliet pretend to kill herself?

In the play, Juliet and Romeo love each other. Juliet is eventually engaged to Paris by her father. In order to avoid the marriage, she takes a potion that makes it appear that she is dead. Romeo was supposed to learn this was a ruse, but actually believes her to be dead, and kills himself. In response, Juliet kills herself.
